Mazak Unveils New MAZATROL MATRIX 2 Control at T3

CNC delivers fast processing speeds, superior surface finishes and short cycle times

Florence, Kentucky, October 25, 2011 – Mazak debuted its new MAZATROL MATRIX 2 CNC control at T3 – Tomorrow's Technology Today, a Discover Mazak 2011 event. As the newest of Mazak's CNC Controls for 5-axis machines, the MATRIX 2 incorporates the latest in CNC technology that provides extremely fast processing speed, excellent cornering, superior part surface finishes and reduced cycle times for 5-axis machining applications.

The MATRIX 2 gets its faster processing speed from NC and PC hardware enhancements that make the control 1.5 times faster than previous CNCs. As a result, small-increments processing speeds for 5-axis machining, for example, will be as much as 2 times faster to reduce machining time.

With a new 5-axis Spline Interpolation Function, the MATRIX 2 can provide extremely smooth surfaces. It creates seamless tool paths from long block-by-block programs in 5-axis machining and makes for much more smoothly controlled tool vectors, all of which allows the control to generate excellent part surface finishes and accuracy.

Processing performance is also greatly improved through the use of new ASIC technology and enhanced NC and PC hardware. Additionally, MATRIX 2 can provide machining speeds of up to 5,314 ipm (135 m/min).

Another critical function of the MATRIX 2 is Volumetric Error Compensation. The function compensates volumetric axis position errors within the full stroke area of the machine tool. These position errors in machine axis movements are mapped using a laser tracer unit and sent via data I/O directly to the control for making the necessary adjustments.

As Mazak's most advanced control system for sophisticated applications and machine types, the MATRIX 2 offers both EIA/ISO and conversational programming for versatility and user-friendly operation. Additionally, the control features a 19" customized position display that provides ample room for more information. Users can combine frequently used displays into one page for setup and for auto mode to operate machines with the least amount of page changes. Also, several combinations can be registered and called up from menu keys.

To meet the demands of high-level automation systems, an extended card can be used to connect the MATRIX 2 to field networks. A universal interface is also provided for integrating to external measuring equipment, which enables continuous multiple-axis high-speed measuring.
