Mazak to Showcase Versatile Multi-Tasking Horizontal Machining Center at IMTS

INTEGREX i-400ST offers shops abundant part-processing options

Florence, Kentucky, June 11, 2012 - Mazak will spotlight more than 20 high-performance machine tools in booth S-8300 at IMTS 2012, taking place Sept. 10 - 15 in Chicago, Ill. Among those machines is the INTEGREX i-400ST, a Multi-Tasking horizontal machining center that employs two turning spindles, a milling spindle and lower turret so that manufacturers can process first and second operations simultaneously or perform required sequential operations on a single workpiece.

The INTEGREX i-400ST, capable of full simultaneous 5-axis Multi-Tasking machining, falls within Mazak's Done-In-One concept as it incorporates all processes from raw material input through final machining in just one machine. As such, the INTEGREX i-400ST reduces production lead times, improves machining accuracy and lowers operating expenses.

The machine's main horizontal turning spindle with a 12" chuck is capable of C-axis indexing in 0.0001-degree increments. The main turning spindle is a 40 hp (30 kW) integral spindle motor that provides a 3,300 rpm maximum spindle speed, while the second, opposed headstock with a 10" chuck features a 35 hp (26 kW) integral spindle motor and 4,000 rpm top speed.

Additionally, a 30 hp (22 kW), 12,000-rpm integral motor milling spindle rotates in the B-axis throughout a range of +210 and -30 degrees from vertical. The milling spindle also travels a generous 9.84" (250 mm) in the Y-axis. For increased versatility, the INTEGREX i-400ST accommodates workpieces up to 25.9" (658 mm) in diameter and 59.8" (1,519 mm) long. It is also able to meet the machining requirements of a wide variety of workpieces thanks to its tool magazine capacities, from the standard 36 tools up to the maximum of 72 tools.

The machine's lower drum turret carries nine tools and can work at either the main or second spindle with the same tool. This makes it possible for the turret to perform balanced cutting operations on one part working in tandem with the machine's vertical milling spindle. There is also the option for milling capability with the lower turret. All of which provides the flexibility to process a workpiece's second operation in the machine's second spindle or to perform first and second operations simultaneously on one workpiece.

The INTEGREX i-400ST features Mazak's new MAZATROL MATRIX 2 CNC control. Within the control are both enhanced hardware and software functionalities that make the control easy to use while also delivering high accuracy and increased productivity. Control hardware performance is much faster with higher processing speeds for small increment operation. Furthermore, a 5-axis spline interpolation function included in the control's software provides smooth toolpaths from long block-by-block programs, easy tool vector control and shorter cycle times as well as superior surface finishes.

As part of Mazak's Five Levels of Multi-Tasking, the INTEGREX i-400ST is a Level 4 machine because it provides full simultaneous 5-axis capability. Mazak's Five Levels of Multi-Tasking allow manufacturers to precisely match machine capabilities to part processing requirements. Machine features and functionalities within the other four levels range from Level 1 with single spindle and rotating tool capabilities and Level 2 with Y-axis off-center machining to Level 3 machines featuring independent milling spindle headstocks with B-axis indexing, as well as full Y-axis travels and tool storage, and Level 5 Ultra-Tasking machines with additional specialized machining functions and Multi-Tasking automation.

In addition to running real-world application cutting demonstrations on the INTEGREX i-400ST, IMTS attendees will get to experience a brand new Mazak booth as well as learn about a new 3-4-5 manufacturing solution for better tailoring Mazak machines to specific applications.
