Mazak Shows Performance and Versatility of HCN 6000-II at DISCOVER 2013

Horizontal machining center offers speed, accuracy and size for large part production

FLORENCE, Ky., Oct. 8, 2013 – At DISCOVER 2013, Mazak demonstrated the advanced capabilities of its HORIZONTAL CENTER NEXUS 6000-II horizontal machining enter. The machine delivers unsurpassed performance, precision, reliability and production value for high-volume large heavy part operations.

Mazak equips the machine with a spacious work envelope and pallet size as well as with fast rapid traverse speeds and rigid, reliable spindles. With high-speed or high-torque available spindle types, the HORIZONTAL CENTER NEXUS 6000-II allows users to match spindle performance to their specific machining requirements with the proper speeds and power. The machine provides fast, efficient and versatile machining of a wide variety of materials from steels to nonferrous metals.

The HORIZONTAL CENTER NEXUS 6000-II’s standard 10,000-rpm, 50-hp, CAT 50-taper spindle uses an advanced compact integral spindle/motor design for low vibration and low heat generation. Mazak also offers the same advanced spindle design in a 7,000-rpm, 40-hp, CAT-50 taper high-torque version, which has a maximum torque of 686 ft-lbs.

A 43-position tool storage magazine comes standard with the HORIZONTAL CENTER NEXUS 6000-II and, as optional, Mazak offers 60, 80, 120 and 160-position magazines in addition to its Tool Hive magazines with either 180, 240 or 330 positions. The large tool storage capacity means shops can handle a wide variety of parts and perform continuous unattended machining over long periods of time.

For fast and precise axis positioning, the machine rapid traverses at 2,362 ipm per axis and accelerates/decelerates at 0.7 G, while smooth high-gain servo and high power AC servomotors provide vibration-free, accurate axis movement.

Expansive machine travels measure 31.5” in X, Y and Z axes, and the worktable rotates 90 degrees in 1.9 seconds for precise four-axis indexing and machining. For large parts, the machine’s pallet size is 19.68” x 19.68”, and it handles a maximum load capacity of 2,204 lbs. for workpiece sizes up to 35.43” in diameter and 39.37” high.

A two-pallet changer is standard with the HORIZONTAL CENTER NEXUS 6000-II and pre-engineered to interface with Mazak’s PALLETECH manufacturing system for automated unattended operation. The PALLETECH system is designed with the flexibility required for shorter product life cycles, reduced in-process inventory, just-in-time production and other demands of today’s manufacturing environment.

The MATRIX NEXUS 2 CNC control on the HORIZONTAL CENTER NEXUS 6000-II simplifies Multi-Tasking operations for parts requiring off-center-line machining and angled drilling, milling or tapping. Featuring innovative conversational and EIA/ISO part programming, the control increases the machine’s productivity through high-speed, high-accuracy part processing and ease of operation.
