Mazak Spotlights QTN 450-II MY with Long Vertical Mill at DISCOVER 2013

Exceptional heavy-duty turning technology for the energy and other large-part industries

FLORENCE, Ky., Oct. 8, 2013 – At DISCOVER 2013, Mazak showcased its QUICK TURN NEXUS (QTN) 450-II MY with a Long Vertical Mill (LVM) tailstock tooling system. The Multi-Tasking turning center brings unmatched productivity and reduced cycle times when processing a wide range of long, large-diameter shaft-type parts. The machine also features milling capability and Y-axis functionality to process parts in single setups, making it extremely versatile for a wide scope of applications.

Ideal for the energy, heavy vehicle and other large component industries, the QUICK TURN NEXUS 450-II MY with optional tailstock-mounted Long Vertical Mill incorporates a 45.27”-long (1,150 mm) boring bar with a special bolt-on angle head. The tooling system allows for deep-hole boring to depths of 40.9” (1,039 mm) and performing inside diameter milling operations, such as internal keyway cutting and internal drilling. In addition to support for the Long Vertical Mill operations, the machine’s rigid construction ensures high-precision heavy-duty machining over long periods of time.

As part of Mazak’s Five Levels of Multi-Tasking, the QUICK TURN NEXUS 450-II MY with LVM is a Level 2 machine – those providing Y-axis off-center machining. Mazak’s Five Levels of Multi-Tasking allow manufacturers to precisely match machine capabilities to part processing requirements. Machine features and functionalities within the other four levels range from Level 1 with single spindle and rotating tool capabilities and Level 3 machines featuring independent milling spindle headstocks with B-axis indexing, as well as full Y-axis travels and tool storage, to Level 4 machines featuring full, simultaneous 5-axis capability, and Level 5 Ultra-Tasking machines with additional specialized machining functions and Multi-Tasking automation.

The QUICK TURN NEXUS 450-II MY’s headstock features a 15”, 18” or 21” (381 mm, 457 mm, 533 mm) chuck, mounted on a 2,000-rpm, 50-hp integrated spindle motor for heavy-duty metal removal. The spindle also serves as a C-axis, capable of being indexed at 0.0001-degree increments to accurately position parts for square facing and slotting cuts and precisely drilled holes. Additionally, the C-axis spindle is a full-function CNC controlled axis for milling.

The machine has a 12-position drum turret equipped with a 4,000-rpm, 10-hp rotary tool spindle for milling, drilling and tapping operations, allowing many processes to be completed in a single machine cycle. Axis travels measures 13.39” (340.1 mm) in X, 8” (203.2 mm) in Y and 125” (3,175 mm) in Z.

Additionally, the machine’s NC servo tailstock enables automated processes. The tailstock is fully programmable, driving in the W-axis on its own AC servomotor and ball screw. Through the part program, the tailstock will retract to a known position and its center makes contact with the part with consistent holding pressure. Further, because of its positive independent drive system, the tailstock can be used to drill holes on a shaft centerline, which adds versatility to the jobs it can process.

The QUICK TURN NEXUS 450-II MY with LVM comes with Mazak’s MATRIX NEXUS 2 CNC control. It features enhanced benefits and simplifies Multi-Tasking operations for parts requiring off-center-line machining and angled drilling, milling or tapping. With unequalled innovation for conversational and EIA/ISO programming, the control incorporates a wide variety of advanced features for increased productivity through high-speed, high-accuracy machining as well as ease of operation.

A key standard device on the QUICK TURN NEXUS 450-II MY with LVM is Mazak’s Tool Eye, an automatic tool-presetting system. By bringing the tool tip into contact with the Tool Eye, offset of tool nose position, tool measurement, and data registration are done automatically, ensuring accuracy and reduced setup time. The Tool Eye can also be programmed to monitor tool wear on a periodic basis.

Several automation strategies can be integrated with the QUICK TURN NEXUS 450-II MY with LVM. These include bar feeders as well as pedestal-mount and overhead-mount robot arms, all of which increase productivity without additional labor.
