Mazak Demonstrates Simply Innovative Small Parts Production

Mazak recently demonstrated its simple but innovative VERTICAL CENTER UNIVERSAL (VCU) 300A 5X for small, complex part production in all volume requirements. The small-footprint vertical machining center cost-effectively packages productivity-enhancing features, such as a 5-axis rotary/tilt table and automatic tool changer, so shops can grow their business without making a huge capital investment.

The VCU 300A 5X comes standard equipped with a robust, high-performance 10,000-rpm, CAT 40-taper spindle that delivers exceptional metal removal capabilities in all common materials, including steel, aluminum and cast iron. Optional speeds of 12,000 and 20,000 rpm are also available so users can effectively match spindle performance with their machining requirements.

A cam-driven automatic tool changer significantly reduces non-cut times on the VCU 300A 5X by quickly exchanging tools and getting the spindle back in the cut in the shortest time possible. The reliable tool monitoring on the machine maximizes production efficiency and lowers operating costs via early problem detection. A standard 18 or optional 24 tool storage capacity ensures continuous machining operation and increased versatility.

A 945-ipm rapid traverse rate in the X, Y and Z axes further shortens non-cut times while the machine’s high-accuracy rotary/tilt table with durable, high-speed roller gear cam technology provides an B-axis (tilting) rotation of +20 ~ -120 and a C-axis rotation of +/- 360 degrees. Machine travels measure 11.81" x 11.81" x 20.07" for the X, Y and Z axes, respectively.

The Mazak MX Hybrid Roller Guide System on the VCU 300A 5X enables the machine to deliver high levels of durability and reliability, resulting in long-term accuracy. The innovative way system increases vibration dampening, extends tool life, handles higher load capacities and eliminates tramp oil in the coolant by utilizing a greener grease-based lubrication system.

The VCU 300A 5X features the company’s MATRIX 2 CNC for optimized 5-axis machining. Within the control are both enhanced hardware and software functionalities that make the control easy to use while also delivering high accuracy and increased productivity. Control hardware performance is much faster with higher processing speeds for small increment operation. The software’s 5-axis spline interpolation function provides smooth tool paths from long block-by-block programs, easy tool vector control and shorter cycle times as well as superior 5-axis surface finishes.

The VCU 300A 5X’s small footprint measures 38.58" wide x 96.46" deep x 104.3" high and features a built-in multi-tap transformer to further conserve valuable floor space. While the machine occupies minimal space, it still provides an ample work envelope for processing part sizes up to 3.91" in diameter and 6.1" long.
