Mazak to Introduce New Compact, High Productivity Turning Center at IMTS 2012

QUICK TURN SMART 100M ideal for job shops focusing on small-parts processing

Florence, Kentucky, June 11, 2012 - Mazak will showcase more than 20 high-performance machine tools in booth S-8300 at IMTS, taking place Sept. 10 - 15 in Chicago, Ill. Among those machines is the new compact QUICK TURN SMART 100M, which is the newest member of the company's popular SMART Series of affordable CNC turning centers. It offers high levels of productivity, accuracy and reliability by reducing the number of setups typically required in high-production manufacturing environments.

Featuring a small footprint of 91" x 70.9", the QUICK TURN SMART 100M turning center is ideal for job shops focused on small-parts processing. It employs a single turning spindle and a drum-style turret with rotating-tool capabilities, as well as delivers fast axis feedrates and incorporates the user-friendly CNC SMART control.

The QUICK TURN SMART 100M's headstock features a 6" chuck mounted on a 15 hp, 6,000-rpm highly rigid integrated spindle motor with a 2.4" diameter spindle bore that is optimized for machining performance. The machine utilizes a 12-position drum turret and 7.5 hp, 4,500-rpm rotary tool spindle for basic milling, drilling and tapping operations, allowing many processes to be completed in a single machine cycle.

The turning center utilizes Mazak's MX Hybrid Roller Guide System on the X- and Z-axes to ensure high rigidity and smooth cutting. It also features X-axis ball screw pretension for high accuracy. Additionally, the machine is very reliable, particularly when set up for long runs with an automatic bar-feeder system.

The QUICK TURN SMART 100M's Mazak SMART control simplifies turning operations through ease of operation, a 10.4" LCD color display and the familiar QWERTY keyboard. A pointing device, acting like a mouse, is also at the operator's fingertips. Conversational part programming can also be accomplished. Mazak SMART control also accepts EIA/ISO programs.

As part of Mazak's Five Levels of Multi-Tasking, the QUICK TURN SMART 100M is a Level 1 machine - those providing single spindle and rotating tool capabilities. Mazak's Five Levels of Multi-Tasking allow manufacturers to precisely match machine capabilities to part processing requirements. Machine features and functionalities within the other four levels range from Level 2 with Y-axis off-center machining and Level 3 machines featuring independent milling spindle headstocks with B-axis indexing, as well as full Y-axis travels and tool storage, to Level 4 machines with full simultaneous 5-axis capability and Level 5 Ultra-Tasking machines with additional specialized machining functions and Multi-Tasking automation.

In addition to running real-world application cutting demonstrations on the QUICK TURN SMART 100M, Mazak will also feature advanced machining technologies for a wide variety of other industry segments, including aerospace, automotive and energy. Additionally, IMTS attendees will get to experience a brand new Mazak booth as well as learn about a new 3-4-5 concept for better tailoring Mazak machines to specific manufacturing applications.
