Mazak Unveils HCU 5000 with Robot Cell

Mazak recently unveiled several new simple but innovative machine tools, including the HORIZONTAL CENTER UNIVERSAL (HCU) 5000 with a robot cell. When paired with such automation, this already high-value 4-axis horizontal machining center provides increased costs savings through better spindle utilization, improved production consistency and a more efficient use of labor.

Designed with high-volume, low-mix shops in mind, such as automotive part makers, the Kentucky-built HCU 5000 machine comes standard equipped with a robust, high-performance 12,000-rpm, CAT 40 spindle that delivers exceptional metal removal capabilities in all common materials, including steel, aluminum and cast iron. An optional 20,000-rpm speed is also available so users can effectively match spindle performance with their machining requirements.

A cam-driven automatic tool changer significantly reduces non-cut times on the HCU 5000 by quickly exchanging tools and getting the spindle back in the cut in the shortest time possible. The reliable tool monitoring on the machine maximizes production efficiency and lowers operating costs via early problem detection. Tool storage capacities of 40, 80 or 120 tools ensure continuous machining operation and increased versatility.

The HCU 5000 comes standard equipped with an NC-positioning table and 19.69" square pallet that allows the machine to perform 4-axis operations on medium-sized parts, while an optional NC-rotary table makes 4-axis simultaneous contouring possible.

The Mazak MX Hybrid Roller Guide System on the HCU 5000 enables the machine to deliver high levels of durability and reliability, resulting in long-term accuracy. The innovative way system increases vibration dampening, extends tool life, handles higher load capacities and eliminates tramp oil in the coolant by utilizing a greener grease-based lubrication system.

The HCU 5000 comes standard with Mazak’s user-friendly SMART CNC that shortens job set-up times by allowing operators of all skill levels to quickly and easily develop machining programs. In fact, programming time is 75 percent faster with the SMART CNC when compared with machines using EIA/ISO systems.

The optional robot cell featured along side the HCU 5000 is one of many automation solutions Mazak can provide to its customers. Whether it's a simple bar feeder that enhances a Mazak turning center’s throughput or a complex system that moves parts through multiple machining and peripheral operations, the company has a level of automation that can give manufacturers a competitive advantage.
