Perfect for the oil and gas and heavy equipment industries, the Mazak QUICK TURN NEXUS (QTN) 550 MY turning center with rotary milling and Y-axis capabilities brings speed, power and precision to the production of long, large parts from titanium, Inconel, nickel-base superalloys and other tough materials.
The machine features a gear-driven integral spindle/motor headstock that offers extreme rigidity in heavy-duty machining as well as high-speed, high-torque operations.
Spindle bore sizes of 275 mm (10.8"), 320 mm (12.5") and 375 mm (14.7") as well as various maximum spindle speeds and horsepower ratings allow this machine to process an array of part shapes and diameters from a wide range of workpiece materials.
The machine's spindle also serves as a C-axis that indexes in 0.0001-degree increments to achieve accurate part positioning and contouring capabilities. Furthermore, the C-axis spindle is a full-function CNC controlled axis for milling.
A 12-position drum turret for VDI-type holders and 11 kW (7.5 hp), 4,000-rpm rotary tool spindle allows the machine to achieve milling, drilling and tapping operations in a single machining cycle.
Another major feature for this machine is its rigid, precise Y-axis turret motion made possible via a double-slide construction that easily withstands the strong cutting forces that are generated in heavy-duty turning and milling operations. Other Y-axis benefits include keyway finishing, off-centerline O.D. drilling and additional tool capacity.
The QTN 550 MY's CNC programmable ballscrew-driven tailstock provides simple, precise and automatic control of the Z-axis’s directional movement and thrust force settings. An electronic AC servomotor enables the tailstock to generate consistent holding pressure for supporting long, heavy workpieces and ensuring turning accuracy. Equipped with a built-in center, the tailstock also provides fast, safe movement at low and high speeds.
Also available for the machine is an optional long boring bar (LBB) tailstock that features a bull nose center and extended length boring bar. Such an arrangement makes it possible for the machine to achieve deep-hole boring depths up to 1,168 mm (46"), which comes in handy when processing long, large-diameter tubing and pipe.
