MTConnect: Practical Applications and Uses

Presented by Neil Desrosiers, Applications Engineer/Developer

June 17, 2014 – 2PM ET

This free, 30-minute webinar will provide company decision makers with everything they need to know about MTConnect, from how to get started with this open-source, royalty-free manufacturing protocol to the many benefits it brings to the factory floor.

Some things you might not know about MTConnect:

  • MTConnect is more than just a non-proprietary, open connectivity standard. It allows manufacturers to establish, at a reasonable investment, a means to gather valuable information on the use of equipment in their manufacturing operations. With this valuable data, manufacturers can make effective decisions on how to improve equipment utilization. And surprisingly, this can result in double-digit percentage increases.
  • MTConnect’s value is in the ability for manufacturers to establish extensive and open channels of communication for plug-and-play interconnectivity between devices. MTConnect allows software to be universally applied between different types of machine models so that information is readily available for improving machine tool utilization and thus overall factory productivity.
  • As a first in the machine tool OEM industry, Mazak began converting its Florence, Kentucky, manufacturing plant over to the MTConnect open communications protocol in 2013. The transformation allows Mazak to monitor its manufacturing equipment and gather valuable data to further improve manufacturing operations. In the near future, Mazak has plans to use MTConnect with third-party software to create custom apps for the mobile monitoring of its manufacturing plant. These apps will give Mazak managers and other key personnel access to live real-time data from equipment monitoring dashboards via mobile devices.
  • The U.S. Government has recognized the value and potential of MTConnect and other digital advances integral to the success of manufacturers. Spring boarding off the concept of its Additive Manufacturing Initiative, the U.S. Government has launched the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Initiative (DMDII) that will address those aspects of manufacturing that can be done digitally or electronically.
